Spanish for “waves,” Las Olas was a dirt road in the early 1900s, leading from the trading settlement along New River which is now downtown Fort Lauderdale, crossing a thicket of salt marsh and mangrove swamp to the barrier island along the Atlantic Ocean. In the 1920s, Charles G. Rodes, son of a Confederate veteran, purchased a one mile wide tract of wetlands along the south side of Las Olas Boulevard for $400 an acre, dredged a network of parallel canals modeled after the waterways of Venice, Italy, to create a series of finger islands.
This method of real estate development has been utilized all over South Florida, dredging canals and using sand to fill salt marsh and mangrove swamp to create waterfront property, and nowhere can you find a more picturesque tropical paradise than Fort Lauderdale, the fabled “Venice of America,” which features over 300 miles of inland waterways.
